4/14/2020 Press Conference on COVID-19 Updates

On April 14th, Governor Baker gave a press conference to provide COVID-19 updates on Testing, Mobile-testing, Personal Protective Equipment, and the Command Center.

Here is the summary.

Testing

  • As of yesterday, MA has conducted about 122,000 tests so far.

  • Yesterday alone, MA conducted 5,319 tests.

  • MA is now conducting testing at 28 sites statewide.

Mobile-testing

  • The Mobile-testing program is currently at nursing homes, assisted living residencies, the Department of Developmental Services group homes (including the Wrentham and Hogan sites), Gillette Stadium and Big E for first responders, grocery stores and others, and a Lowell CVS test site (public can make an appointment online). 

PPE

  • Through the command center over 3.3 million PPE pieces have been distributed thus far. This includes: 

    • Nearly 2 million gloves

    • Over 720,000 masks

    • Over 365,000 masks from the aircraft delivery

    • Over 167,000 gowns

Command Center

  • Starting this past Sunday, the command center has started posting a daily PPE inventory sorted by type and where it has been distributed in the state. 

  • The Department of Public Health is now posting a daily dashboard of hospital capacity around the state and will be posted starting today around 4pm. 

    • Will include an estimated inventory of how many hospital beds are available and where. (In ICU, acute, and field hospital beds) 

  • As of Sunday night, MA is up to 15,900 usable hospital beds statewide. 

    • Roughly 5,000 of those beds are available for non ICU or acute care.

    • Roughly 2,000 of those beds are available for ICU care.

    • Roughly 1,000 of those beds are available in field hospitals for patients who need it.

  • Field hospitals are currently open at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, DCU Center in Worcester, and Newton Pavilion. Over the coming week, additional facilities will open up in Cape Cod, Springfield, and Lowell. All in, these facilities will provide about 1,000 additional beds for patients who do not require ICU level care.
