/On July 27th, Governor Baker gave a press conference to provide a COVID-19 update on Testing, Hospitalizations, and the Expansion of Targeted Free COVID-19 Testing Sites.
Here is the summary.
Testing
Yesterday, there were 273 new positive cases reported.
The seven day average for positive test rates is about 1.9%. This is a 95% decrease from the middle of April.
Please continue to wear face coverings, practice good handwashing/hygiene, disinfect surfaces, and social distance.
Hospitalizations
As of yesterday, there are currently just over 364 individuals hospitalized as a result of COVID-19, and 56 of those individuals are in the ICU.
Please do not hesitate to contact your health care provider about any concerns you may have, COVID-19 related or not. Telehealth is currently a covered benefit in MA that will be extended to cover all residents until at least the end of the calendar year.
Expansion of Targeted Free COVID-19 Testing Sites
Earlier this month, MA launched the “Stop the Spread” testing initiative, which provides free widespread testing. The first round of testing sites was launched on July 10th in eight communities: Chelsea, Everett, Fall River, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Marlborough, and New Bedford. The initiative in these communities will continue through the middle of August.
These eight testing sites have reached many individuals and to date, providers have tested about 19,000 people.
In the first week, the number of tests conducted at the targeted communities increased by 48% compared to the week before. Statewide, the number of tests conducted for that same week increased by about 24%.
To date, the state has received results back for about 17,000 of the 19,000 people who were tested. Currently, the data shows that the average positive test rate was 1.8%.
Today, MA is expanding this free testing program to 8 additional communities: Agawam, Brockton, Methuen, Randolph, Revere, Springfield, Taunton, and Worcester. Please visit mass.gov/stopthespread to find a testing site near you and make an appointment.
These eight communities are reporting a higher COVID-19 positive test rate that is higher than the statewide average. Their testing volume has also decreased by over 20% since the end of April.
These eight new communities make up approximately 10% of the MA population, but constitute about 15% of the Commonwealth’s positive tests in the past week.
